W. Stirland Holdings Limited

The Company was founded by Walter Stirland who started his working life as an apprentice bricklayer in the Nottingham coal mines. After moving to Southampton he found success with his own team of bricklayers, and then with speculative housing developments in the Selsey area. He formed the Company in 1928, diversifying into joinery and civil engineering, and established a new headquarters in Birdham.

During the post-war years he continued to build the Company, forming strong relationships with local authorities for the construction of schools and other public buildings as well as continuing with the Company’s own residential development projects. He built the Stirland name into a byword for high-quality local developments.

In the 1950s his son, Robin Stirland, joined the Company on a plumbing apprenticeship before graduating to site management and contracts management. He took over as Managing Director in the 1970s and built on the business relationships formed by his father, cementing the Company’s position as first port of call for local construction needs.

The current Managing Director, Shaun Stirland, started with the Company as a general labourer in 1979, and also worked his way up through Site Manager and Contracts Manager positions, gaining a thorough and practical understanding of all aspects of the Company’s work. In 2009 he took over the Managing Directorship from his father and has continued to grow the Company, forging relationships with new Clients and widening both the scope of works undertaken and the geographical area in which the Company operates.

All three Managing Directors have been time-served hands-on employees of the Company. This practical experience has given them all a deep understanding of the construction process and awareness of the challenges presented.
